“Without critical research, I wouldn’t be here today…”
Debra spent most of her adult life working as a nurse. She knew the signs of stroke. She’d cared for survivors and seen the devastation and uncertainty that follows stroke.
She never imagined it would happen to her.
But one night, everything changed. Debra’s husband Harry recognised what was happening and called an ambulance right away. At the hospital, doctors confirmed his fears. Debra was having a stroke and needed to be transferred urgently for a newly available procedure that would save her life.
The new procedure that saved Debra’s life, endovascular clot retrieval, was only available because of years of stroke research.
Research made possible by the generosity of people like you.
Today, Debra is alive because researchers never gave up, and because our supporters helped turn breakthroughs into lifesaving treatments.
But there is still so much more to do.
Stroke continues to shatter Australian lives and thousands of survivors are facing outcomes that research hasn't yet found the answers to. And too many families lose someone they love.
Researchers are closer than ever to the next breakthrough – but they need you to stand with them.
You can help fund the next vital breakthrough that will save lives and gives more Australians a second chance, just like Debra.
Please give a tax deductible donation today and help fund the discovery that saves the life of someone you love.
Less than 2% of National Health and Medical Research (NHMRC) funding in 2025 went towards stroke research.
Since 2008, Stroke Foundation has awarded over $7.1 million in Research Grants to 233 researchers.
That's more then 45,000 strokes this year. With current trends, it is estimated that the number of stroke events in Australia could increase to around 72,000 by 2050.
