At just 6 years old, Hailey's life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with a stroke.
"At first, I couldn't understand what had happened to me," Hailey shares. "At such a young age, I didn't know what my brain did, or what a stroke was."
After difficultly getting a diagnosis, Hailey felt afraid and confused. To make matters worse, the health system at the time didn't properly cater for stroke in children or young people, so most of her treatment was through the adult system.
Hailey remembers "I was asking mum 'Where are the other kids like me?', she couldn't tell me. We didn't know of anyone else who had experienced childhood stroke."
Hailey's story highlights the need for specialised care to ensure that survivors of stroke, at any age, receive the support they need to thrive.
