At 38 Julie's life changed in an instant
"Dad found me on the floor. I couldn't get up," Julie remembers. "My left arm wouldn't move. When I tried to speak, the words wouldn't come. Everything I said was jumbled."
Her parents called triple zero, thinking she was having a seizure. But what the operator said shocked them: "I think your daughter is having a stroke."
She's not alone. Many Australians don't realise stroke can strike anyone, at any age. And many don't recognise the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time being critical) - meaning they also hesitate to act F.A.S.T.
That operator knew the signs - and that knowledge saved Julie's life.
Ten days later, while in rehabilitation, Julie's experienced another stroke.
This time, nobody recognised what was happening until the next day, and by that time, Julie had completely lost the use of her left arm.
